Due to their efficiency and versatility, LED tube lights are one of today’s favourite lighting solution for commercial, industrial and residential applications. More and more fluorescent tube fixtures are being replaced by LED tubes, but choosing the right replacement LED tube can be a daunting task, given the amount of options and considerations.

‘How to choose the right replacement LED tube light?’, you may be wondering. This guide aims to provide the answers, allowing you to better understand your options, according to your needs.
LED TUBE LIGHT BENEFITS:
  • Long-lasting: LED tube lights last more than five times more than traditional tube lights. This is one of the main reasons behind their popularity.
  • Cost-efficient: Because LED tube lights have a longer life span, they are a great long-term investment, even though their purchase cost is slightly higher than traditional tube lights.
  • Temperature output: LED tube lights do not generate heat.
  • Safety: LED tube lights do not contain mercury.
  • Versatility: Beyond replacing traditional tube lights, LED tube lights are adaptable and suitable for numerous applications and can be integrated into design and architectural features, for original results.

LED TUBE LIGHTS - SIZES
  • Tube lights labels include a T followed by a number (i.e. T5). The "T" stands for "tubular" or "tube" and the number refers to the diameter of the tube, in eighths of an inch. The most popular LED tubes for office and home applications are the T8 tubes.
  • In order to replace an existing tube with an LED tube light, check the size of your existing tube light (it is usually marked at the end of the bulb). If that is not the case, measure the diameter of the tube to determine its T value.
LED lights come in different tube sizes, shapes and diameters, allowing for maximum versatility in a vast array of applications.
LED TUBE LIGHTS - WATTAGE VS LUMENS
  • Since LED tube lights only use a small amount of watts, a better way to determine their luminous flux, or light emitted, is to consider the lumens output. The luminous flux should be taken into consideration when establishing a lighting plan. It is determined based on the light needed and the amount of natural light available in your space.
  • The light provided by LED tube lights is directed downward, as opposed to fluorescent lamps, which distribute their light on a full 360 degree spectrum. This makes LED tube lights more efficient, since they provide a more focused lighting.
LED TUBE LIGHTS - COLOR TEMPERATURE
  • Color temperatures dramatically alter the way the space is perceived. They should be chosen according to the function of the space (work area, office, public space, etc.) and the amount of natural light available.
  • Color temperature is measured in Kelvin. Lower Kelvin values correspond to yellowish lights, while higher Kelvin values correspond to blue lights.
  • Cool white is best suited for work areas, as it helps reduce eye strain, being the closest to natural day light.
Color temperatures changes the way we perceive objects. The extent to which objects’ colors are accurate under a light source is measured by the Color Rendering Index (CRI). Most LED tube lights have a CRI rating of 80. Source : Wikimedia
LED tube lights do not need ballasts to operate, contrary to fluorescent tube lights. This is due to the fact that LED tubes will not warm up, therefore their temperature does not need to be regulated during use by a ballast.

There are several different LED tube types available, when it comes to fixture ballasts: tubes that plug and replace incandescent bulbs without rewiring, and ballast-bypass tubes, which require some rewiring:
LED TUBE LIGHTS - PRICING
LED fluorescent tubes are an excellent long-term investment. Although the upfront cost is slightly higher than fluorescent alternatives, their return on investment period is shorter than 12 months, thanks to their much lower electricity consumption.
Since LED tube lights last longer, maintenance and replacement costs are lower.
LED tube light installation (in new construction or remodelling) require considerable electrical labor costs.
