How much power/lumen output do I need for my application?
With the arrival of LED lighting products, we can now see many products showing Lumen outputs instead of wattage to designate light output. Lumens are actually the true measurement of how much light a bulb produces; the more lumens the bulb makes, the brighter it is. For recessed lighting, how much lighting output you need depends mostly on ceiling height and application. For ceiling heights of around 8 to 9 feet, an output of 450 lumens or more is recommended. For ceilings above 9 feet, we recommend a light output of 600 lumens or more per fixture. Remember that light intensity of most lighting fixtures whether halogen, incandescent or LED can be dimmed if necessary by using a dimmer switch.
Where should I place my recessed lights?
The first thing to do in any recessed lighting project is to decide where you need light in other words; you must choose your focal point? In a living room for instance, you might want your lights to be over a specific table, in your bedroom you might want to create a light path around your bed. Lighting can be positioned different ways which does not always need to be symmetrical.
How much space should I allow between each recessed light?
Generally speaking, standard ceiling heights for residential applications are between 8 and 10 ft. In order to obtain smooth-continuous light, recessed light spacing will usually be between 3 to 5 feet. For an 8 foot ceiling, we typically recommend between 3 to 4 feet between each fixture and 4 to 5 feet between each fixture for a 10 foot ceiling. Tighter spacing will provide more light within a given area. Finally, the rule of thumb to determine proper spacing of recessed lights from the wall is to space them at half the distance they are from one another so an arrangement with 4 feet spacing between each recessed light would be spaced approximately 2 feet from the wall.
What is the difference between IC (insulation contact) or Non-IC rated?
Prior to purchasing recessed lights, it is important to know if the ceiling or area where the recessed lights will be located has insulation or not. Direct contact with thermal insulation requires the light fixture to be IC rated. Conversely, if the fixture is not in contact with thermal insulation a Non-IC rated model can be used.
